Android O Preview : New Features

Planned to be launched with Pixel 2, Android O has started creating its fair share of activity among the mobile application developers; worldwide. The developer’s preview has rolled down a series of features that the new OS would carry. Let us take a look at them to prepare your mobile application development company for the demand that it will now be getting…

1.Notifications

The app developers can now put time limits on the notifications and will be able to give snooze option to the users for them to dismiss notifications that they don’t wish to view.

2.Data Management

Every app will be given a fixed storage space quota for their cached data, and at the time of freeing the disk space, apps that would be using more space than what is allocated, will lose their data first.

3.New visual Icons

Android O icons will allow visual effects usage when designing icons. So now the developers will be able to experiment with the shape and size of the icons they intend to put in an app.

4.Limitations on Background apps

The new operating system aims at preventing the loss of device’s battery life by restricting apps from running in the background for days on end.

6.Improved connectivity

Its most loved feature - WiFi Aware will permit nearby devices and apps to find and connect over the WiFi without having the need of any internet access point. We are also expected to see a better performing Bluetooth.

7.Multi screen Option

The Picture-in-picture mode will let users browse through content, see movies or do things in the background, all while seeing a video or chatting via a small box in their tablet’s or Smartphone screen.

8.Auto fill Forms

Users will now be able to opt for the auto fill option where they will have all the information filled, when asked for, with them only filling one or two blanks. While auto fill is still an option in Google, the new OS will make it all the more popular.

9.Font Resources

The apps can now utilize fonts in XML layouts in addition to defining the font families in XML

10.WebView betterments

In Android O, Google is enabling the multiprocessing mode to default and is adding an API to enable the app in handling crashes and errors, for greater security and enhanced app stability. As a greater security measure, you can opt in the app's WebView objects to cross check URLs via the Google Safe Browsing feature.

While these are just ten features that have been announced by Google, we will be able to see what exactly Android O offers, on September 2017 – its release date in the United Kingdom. Till then, we will have to wait to have an estimate of how users took it in.
